Why do people attack Ben Watson so much, I still think he his a great TE. The injuries he gets are from behind dumped up the middle or a horse collar on the sideline. I think he has good hands and makes plays. I will always remember him for the play on champ bailey.
Question I am asking you guys, what do you think about Pollard. I dont really have anything positive to say about him. And after that i just see more question marks, with a chance of someone maybe steppin up?!
David Thomas Stephen Spach Tyson DeVree Jonathan Stupar
I can't say I understand the attacks on Ben Watson either. 2004 he was injured. In '05, he excelled as a backup TE. In 2006, he took over the reigns as the pass receiving TE, and had an excellent 1st half to his season. He slowed down in the second half due to injuries. Last year, he wasn't making too many catches, but who can blame him, he had Moss, Welker, and Stallworth making catches instead. He still had good endzone production, and he showed flashes of the playmaking ability that we all covet.
People continually attack his hands, but I don't think his hands are a problem at all. He occassionally drops a difficult catch, but overall, the issue with his hands has been blown out of proportion. He's no Daniel Graham in the passing game, but he's done some things to make up for that with his big play ability, and athleticism.
If the oppurunities are there, Watson could be a Pro Bowler.
When we signed Pollard, I was pretty excited. But now, as you said, not so much. He looks stiff, slow, and unathletic. He also struggles as a blocker. I'm not sure he'll make the team.
As for the other tight ends, I think David Thomas could step up into a pass catching role opposite Ben Watson. His hands are some of the best I have ever seen in a tight end, and he's also improving in the blocking game. I also like Jonathan Stupar. He's not afraid to make a catch in traffic, and he is an improving blocker, especially on the second level. Stephen Spach is a guy who has okay hands, and seems to be a decent pass protect, as he has good footwork. I don't know much about DeVree. He seems like he can block, but his hands seem a little sub-par.
My guess is that David Thomas will step up, and Spach or Stupar will be able to earn a roster spot over Pollard. And as you pointed out, don't sleep on Ben Watson.
